Wii outsold Wii U in Q1

Nintendo has released its financial report for the Q1 period of their 2014 financial year, bringing in net profit of 8.62 billion yen ($88 million).

The company made an operating loss of 4.92 billion yen (about $50 million) on net sales of 81.5 billion yen ($832 million) in Q1.

In terms of consoles and game numbers, Nintendo sold only 160,000 Wii U consoles, 1.4 million 3DS handheld devices and 1.03 million software units worldwide.

This puts the Wii U sales on 3.61 million since its launch, under Nintendo’s initial prediction, which aimed to sell 5.5 million units by the end of March.

One of the most interesting numbers is that the original Wii managed to sell 210,000 units in Q1, which is more than the Wii U.

Nintendo explained that it aims to boost sales with the release of some first-party games in the second half of 2013, with titles such as Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Super Mario 3D World and others.
