Activision’s latest entry into the Call of Duty universe, Ghosts has been confirmed to have dedicated servers for both Xbox One and PC.
However, Activision and Infinity Ward won’t comment on the availability of dedicated servers for other platforms.
Speaking to NowGamer at Gamescom 2013, Infinity Ward’s Executive Producer, Mark Rubin, said:
Well, we’re having to not talk about all of it right now. We did mention dedicated servers on Xbox One.
One thing I can say is we’re also doing dedicated servers on PC. So PC will be all dedicated servers, all of it.
I don’t have details on how dedicated servers are going to work on PC, partly because we’re still in development and still working on all those features.
Developing the multiplayer component of Ghosts is a critical task for Activision and Infinity Ward, as this year sees the release of DICE’s Battlefield 4, which promises massive, 64-man matches, destructible environments and a host of other components that make working as a team a crucial component of winning the match.
Later on in the interview, Rubin again noted that dedicated servers were coming to the PC and Xbox One platforms, adding: “I can’t talk about any other platforms.”
This is a puzzling comment, with Rubin omitting details about the Xbox 360 version of the game.
Attention also needs to be drawn to Rubin’s comments about how he can’t detail dedicated servers for the PC. Dedicated servers were provided on a rental basis to Activision by GameServers.com for Call of Duty Black Ops, with options for players to rent their own servers from the company at a nominal price. Today, that has been replaced by peer-based matchmaking instead.
Microsoft recently announced plans to shut down their Games For Windows Live marketplace and service, which may mean that not only are they moving to sell games under the Xbox Live brand from now on, they may also be providing dedicated servers to third-parties such as Activision.
