Metro: Last Light has been a success for game publisher Deep Silver, who acquired the IP from the now-defunct THQ in 2013.

In its first week on sale, Last Light managed to eclipse the total number of Metro 2033 copies sold since its launch, which itself moved about two million copies.

Deep Silver says that they are happy with the series’ performance and plan to continue the journey through the war-ravaged Russian wasteland. Speaking to Joystiq on the Gamescom 2013 show floor, Deep Silver CEO, Klemens Kundratitz, said that the company was eager to see the full potential the series offered.

“It’s been a positive experience,” he said. “I’m very glad we acquired that brand. While it launched in a very dry space in the gaming calendar this year, it still got a lot of attention. Our ambition is to absolutely continue with that brand and we will also, in the next phase, look to making it more accessible for a broader gamer audience.”

Kundratitz also noted that despite their eagerness to boost the game’s appeal, they would be working closely with Metro 2033 author Dmitry Glukhovsky to make sure the game and its storyline remains true to its core.

“It is true with a license you have to be aligned with the license holder. In this case it’s Dmitry who holds the license and he’s a great guy. He enjoys the game, the success of the game and we have a good relationship. Going forward, he has been very positive contributing to the last game – I think he can play an active role for whatever comes in the future.”

I enjoyed both games, so to find out they will expand the universe is definitely good news to me! Let’s just hope Deep Silver maintain the relatively high standard considering they are not exactly Publishers who are known for stellar AAA production values.
