Ster-Kinekor will be bringing it back, the cinema chain announced at a “round table discussion” for media on Wednesday, 28 August 2013.
Details are sketchy, but Ster-Kinekor has confirmed the announcement via its Twitter account.
It isn’t clear when exactly Imax will be back, but Ster-Kinekor told media that it would launch Imax in SA with Thor 2 at its cinema complex in the Gateway mall, Durban.
Roll-outs in Gauteng are expected from mid-2014.
According to reports, Ster-Kinekor will be making further announcement regarding its Imax plans next week.
IMAX was previously operated in South Africa by Old Mutual Investment Group Property Investments, which said some three years ago that it had decided not to continue operating Imax past 30 June 2010.
