Nintendo 2DS handheld console, Wii U price cut announced

Nintendo has announced a new handheld gaming console – the Nintendo 2DS. The console maker also announced a USD50 price drop for the Wii U Deluxe Set to a new suggested retail price of $299.99, effective on Sept. 20.

The Nintendo 2DS will be available in red or blue in the US from 12 October 2013 for a recommended price of USD129.99 (±R1,340).

No South African pricing or launch info has been communicated by Nintendo South Africa.

Nintendo says that the 2DS is actually part of the 3DS family; it plays the entire library of packaged and downloadable games for Nintendo 3DS, only in 2D.

Nintendo said it is designed for those looking for a more affordable entry point into the world of Nintendo hand-held video games.

The system features a fixed form factor, hence no hinged screen as on other DS models.

At the core, it has the same hardware features as the 3DS: dual screens with the lower a touch-screen operated by accompanying stylus; the same control layout; and wireless connectivity for multiplayer features and eShop access.
