Ubisoft ditches printed user manuals

Mega-publisher Ubisoft has announced that in order to be “greener”, it is planning on no longer printing manuals to accompany its games. Instead, it will beef up in-game instructions, theoretically nullifying the need for printed instructions.

Ubisoft is claiming that its intention is to make its operation more environmentally friendly, which is great, and I’m sure they won’t miss the printing costs.

Not only will they remove the manuals, but they will start using “eco-friendly” cases. Apparently Splinter Cell: Conviction was the first game to use the new case, although I didn’t notice any difference in my review copy.

Personally, I think it’s great to see big companies like Ubisoft moving toward lessening their impact on the environment.

Still, gamers around the world are bound to be annoyed, as the game manual is an important part of a purchase for many.
