A film project based on Dante’s Inferno has been hovering around in the Hollywood oven for quite some time, but the ambitious movie has finally got its director: Fede Alvarez.
Alvarez recently finished up work on the 2013 Evil Dead remake, and has directed a bunch of other horror films, including Panic Attack.
Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing with EA Entertainment vice president Patrick O’Brien also on board as a producer.
Dante’s Inferno is based on Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, which was written in the early 1300s.
The first part of the three-part poem follows Dante, who is a knight, who with the help of the poet Virgil, ventures into the nine rings of hell to rescue his beloved Beatrice. In the process, he becomes an unwitting pawn in an ancient war between heaven and hell.
EA’s 2010 game took some poetic license and turned the adventure into a hellish hack-‘n-slash, which raised eyebrows with its brutal violence and shocking creatures.
Thanks to Edelweiss for spotting the news.
