THQ’s bankruptcy was a sad moment for the gaming industry and one of its huge losses was that of the UFC IP, which was sold to EA; but now THQ wants to claim back all profits from the upcoming EA UFC release.
THQ alleges that EA had prior and intimate information of THQ’s financial state due to a potential buyout back in 2006. It’s said that EA and UFC owner Zuffa Inc. then conspired to free the license from THQ when it was at its weakest.
THQ also accuses EA and Zuffa of fraud, demanding that the license (or equivalent value plus interest, which THQ deems to be approximately $20 million) be restored to THQ, that Zuffa’s claim as a creditor be annulled, and that EA act as trustee of the license. The latter would mean that EA’s profits from its own UFC game (coming in 2014) would belong to THQ.
EA was contacted regarding the lawsuit, with a representative saying: “We believe these claims are without merit.”
