It’s Red Dead Redemption week over here at MyGaming. The more we see and read about this game, the more excited we get. A sandbox western third person shooter created by Rockstar, featuring multiple gameplay components, from gambling, stand-offs, exploring, interacting with NPCs, horse riding and hunting to fending off wild animals in the wilderness, and witnessing public hangings, RDR looks set to be a truly engaging and dynamic experience.’
Like any self respecting sandbox game, RDR features an overarching storyline which players may follow at their own pace in order to progress. There will also be random events happening outside the story line, and much like Rockstar’s GTA series, there is likely to be as much fun to be had exploring the world as there is in following the story.
A morality system will track a player’s honour, with good and bad deeds having an impact on their overall honour score. Good deeds will include things like helping an NPC in trouble or capturing a bandit alive instead of killing him. On the opposite side of the spectrum, players will be able to rob civilians and commit other crimes. Coupled with the game’s fame system, the honour system will affect how NPC’s react to the primary protagonist.
The action will take place from a third-person perspective, and gun fights will be an important part of the game. The game will utilise a cover mechanic, whereby players can slide between obstacles. Players will be able to target different body parts in order to achieve different results. A leg shot will take out a bandit non-lethally, as opposed to a headshot which will kill the enemy instantly. There are also a variety of weapons available, all period accurate, from basic revolvers to bolt-action rifles, primitive machine pistols, dynamite, knives, lassos, shotguns and cannons.
Excited? Well you should be, assuming you have either a PS3 or Xbox 360.
