If you aren’t familiar with Red Dead Redemption, then you probably haven’t been visiting MyGaming much this week as we have been babbling relentlessly about it since Monday.
I love the fact that there was not that much hype surrounding this game up until a few days ago. Unlike the Call of Duty franchise for example, the media have for the most part not had much to say about the game over the past few months.
This may be because it predecessor – Red Dead Revolver – was a bit underwhelming. Red Dead Redemption on the other hand is looking like an entirely different animal.
Early review scores are remarkably high, and the game has a Metacritic score of 95/100 on 360 and PS3. There hasn’t been anything this critically acclaimed since Uncharted 2 last year, so I am pretty anxious to see what all the hysteria is about.
Speaking of Uncharted 2, 360 owners are due a 95/100+ game, and it looks like they will be getting a slightly better version of Red Dead Redemption than PS3 owners.
Firstly, widespread reports are coming in that the XBox 360 version runs at a significantly higher, and more consistent frame rate than its PS3 counterpart. To make matters worse, it would seem that the 360 version is better looking.
Looking at comparative screen shots posted on the Neogaf forums, it is obvious that the 360 version looks slightly crisper than the PS3 version. It also features more environment detail, which is noticeable when we look at things like shadows, grass, tress etc.
While the Xbox 360 version runs at 1280×720 with 2xAA, various pixel counters have analysed the PS3 version and found it to run at 1152×640.
This has obviously led to a fair amount of internet rage, which I think is a bit silly. While the PS3 version does not look as crisp as the 360 version, it is hardly something that is going to seriously impact a person’s enjoyment of the game. Having said that, I know which version I’m getting…
If you care about stuff like this, then head on over to the Neogaf forums to inspect the screen shots yourself.
For everyone else, be sure to check out this 5 minute long gameplay video, and these screenshots.
