Conned Xbox One buyer gets free console

10 December 2013

Remember when 19-year-old UK teenager Peter Clatworthy was duped through eBay into buying a picture of an Xbox One for a cool R7,800?

Well, it seems an electronics retailer in Nottingham, CEX saw a golden marketing opportunity and has given Clatworthy a free Xbox One console.

The original intent was to get the console for his 4-year-old son as a Christmas gift, said Clatworthy.

The eBay listing did say it was a picture of an Xbox One console, but Clatworthy said he expected to receive an actual console since it was listed in the video games and consoles category on eBay.

When Clatworthy received the picture in the post, written on the back was the message “Thank you for your purchase”.

Although Clatworthy was refunded by eBay for the scam purchase, the Xbox One is apparently sold out across the UK – luckily for him, CEX stepped up to make the wises of Clatworthy Junior come true.

“I’m just overwhelmed by the reaction to the story. All I wanted was a refund. I cannot believe this,” said Clatworthy.

David Draycott, assistant manager at CEX said “We as a company are always looking to do a good thing for somebody. Hopefully Peter and his son will both be able to enjoy this together.”

I’m sure the young Clatworthy will thoroughly enjoy launch titles such as Ryse and Dead Rising 3 while dad proudly watches on…

Peter Clatworthy tears up the photograph he received from the Ebay scam as CEx assistant manager Dave Draycott is about to present him with a brand new Xbox One. See NTI story NTIXBOX. A scam victim who forked out for a PHOTO of the new Xbox finally got his hands on the prized machine- after a local shop took pity on him and GAVE him the console. Gutted Peter Clatworthy, 19, thought he had bagged a bargain when he snapped up the limited-edition Xbox One on eBay - unaware he was being conned. The dad-of-one, who had hoped to give the new Microsoft super-console to son McKenzie, four, for Christmas, was stunned when the 'item' - which was just a picture - arrived in an A4 envelope. To add insult to injury the callous seller even wrote "thank you for your purchase" on the back of the grainy print out. Red-faced student Peter rushed to his computer to check the auction page - and was horrified when he realised he had been duped. The misleading ad listed under the "video games and consoles" category stated the item as "XBox One Fifa Day One Edition, Photo Brand New UK 2012" next to an image of the console. Bosses at eBay refunded his cash - but Peter feared McKenzie would miss out on the console after it sold out across the UK. But after his story caught the attention of millions - including Radio 1 DJ Greg James - a local computer games shop took pity on Peter and gifted him with his own Xbox One.
