YouTube has unveiled its top videos of 2013 – known as the YouTube Rewind – revealing that gaming channel Pew Die Pie is the top channel among South African viewers.
South African favourites for 2013 included Ylvis, Miley, Katy, Psy and Rihanna, but local events took precedence as viewers watched the tragic Pinetown truck accident in Durban, and the Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi.
Rugby player Bryan Habana raced a new British Airways A380 plane, viewers showed their concern about child safety on Johannesburg’s roads, and there were spoofs on How Animals Eat Their Food.
In SA, a record number of comedy channels made the most watched list for 2013. Ellen, Just For Laughs, MduComics and Failarmy were favourites, while gaming channel Pew Die Pie came in first place in the Top Channels list.
Globally, the world watched the The Fox more than 265 million times, making it the top trending video of 2013. The Fox was also a top searched Halloween costume, and converted into a children’s book.
Other top videos and trends included Psy’s post-Gangnam Style record-setter Gentleman, and there were more “Harlem Shake” videos than there are people in Manhattan (over 1.7 million).
To celebrate all these moments, over 60 top creators on YouTube got together and made a little video. Check out the YouTube Rewind 2013 Channel for even more top lists from around the world.
YouTube 2013 Top lists
YouTube calculates top videos based on a number of measures, such as views, shares, likes, response videos, and more. Top channels are based on subscriber growth in 2013, taking into account views, reach, and engagement.
“There’s no exact formula, but popular videos tend to have three key characteristics. They’re entertaining or informative in some way, they’re something that you want to share with other people, and they come from a channel with more videos like it,” said YouTube.
