Cyber-attack takes down Steam, Origin services

3 January 2014

According to reports on Kotaku, in two separate claims of responsibility, “hackers” have taken down both Steam and Origin services.

The attacks appear to be in the form of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), which isn’t hacking as such, but still a pretty effective and annoying way to bring down online services.

In the case of Origin, group DERP (who also claim responsibility for bringing down Battle.net and League of Legends last week), are apparently behind the attack.

EA Support didn’t go so far as to admit they were hit with a cyber-attack, but did tweet that they are working on connectivity and login issues affecting various platforms and games.

The claims behind Steam’s outage are a bit more dubious, with a pair of Twitter users claiming responsibility and posting pictures of the infamous Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC) DDoS tool.

At this point, Valve has not communicated anything regarding the issues, but Steam services such as the store and community are very much offline.
