Tomb Raider: Xbox One vs PS4 performance stats

The Tomb Raider Definitive Edition next-gen console performance saga has been dragging on, and refreshed the debate on just which console is better in terms of performance.

We all still love console wars, right?

Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry has been tinkering with the game, and while they promise a thorough face-off analysis coming soon, they have some preliminary results.

Both versions run at 1080p, but Digital Foundry noted that the Xbox One version does indeed appear to be capped at 30 frames per second (FPS), while the PS4 version maxes out at 60FPS.

Below is a summary of their performance testing results.

The PS4 and Xbox One versions of Tomb Raider Definitive Edition were handled by two separate developers, Nixxes and United Front respectively.

As Digital Foundry notes, with two different developers, we got two different performance levels.

United Front would have benefited from the relatively simpler task of porting the PC version’s DirextX 11 code as the Xbox One uses the same API.

Nixxes will have ported the PC version to the PlayStation 4’s LibGNM API, which is a more complex task.

Digital Foundry observed that while the PS4 had performance benefits, the variations were somewhat jarring, and it may have also benefitted from a frame cap, albeit a less conservative one than 30FPS.
