Legend of Grimrock 2 screens and details revealed

Legend of Grimrock was one of 2012’s inspiring indie success stories.

Finnish developer, Almost Human, funded the game the old fashioned way – having decided against a difficult crowd-funding approach and loathe to sign up with a publisher, they completed contract work until they had enough money to invest in this make-or-break game project.

The rest is history – Legend of Grimrock was a great success with critics and gamers alike, catching the imagination of old-school grid-based action-RPG dungeon crawler fans as well as a new generation of players.

Now, the team is seeking to capitalise on the momentum of that success and is working on Legend of Grimrock 2, which is pegged for Windows and OSX sometime in 2014.

The game is set on the Isle of Nex – a secluded island faraway from civilization, where the protagonist group of prisoners end up against their will.

As we expect, the party must solve puzzles utilizing new types of mechanics, and will face new, deadlier, more intelligent monsters. However, unlike the cramped and diabolical prison in the original, players will explore a world of dark woods, misty swamps, underground tunnels, and ancient ruins.

In Legend of Grimrock 2, the spellcasting and potion crafting systems have been greatly improved to make the game more accessible and fun to play – admittedly, these were a bit clumsy in the first.

The skill system has been completely redesigned and replaced with a new perk-buy system that allows for more flexible character skill development.

The game also features new spells and over a hundred new items as well as a new playable race, the Ratling, and a new character class.

Potions can now be mixed directly in hand without going to inventory. Spells can be cast using mouse gestures with less mouse clicks.

“With the success of Grimrock, we have had the privilege and luxury to listen to the audience, go through all the feedback and reviews and fine-tune all aspects of the game,” said Petri Häkkinen of Almost Human. “At the same time we have carefully avoided changing the core game too much to stay true to its origins.”
