Triumph Studios (also of Overlord fame) has announced the return of their Age of Wonders game, after a 10 year absence. Age of Wonders 3 will launch on 31 March 2014 for PC.
“The PC games market is clearly booming again, so we could finally realize our vision for a next-gen Age of Wonders game,” said Triumph Studios.
Interesting note is that Mojang’s Markus “Notch” Persson of Minecraft fame was an investment partner, helping make Age of Wonders 3 a reality.
The classic turn-based strategy gameplay returns, as does the fantasy world setting. The game offers a mix of empire building, strategic combat, and role-playing. As described by the developers:
The banishment of the Wizard Kings ended the Second Age in Chaos. Now, new heroes and villains rise to claim the world’s riches. Only the most powerful leaders will prevail to reign over the Third Age of Wonders!
In Age of Wonders you’re the leader of a fantasy realm. You can be a character similar to a Sauron, a Galadriel, a Lord Stark. You explore a mysterious world, build up an empire, recruit mighty heroes to go on quests and wage epic wars to conquer the spoils of a paradise-like world. The game is epic and we invite anybody who hasn’t played the game yet, to check out Age of Wonders 3 as it’s basically a relaunch; a perfect point to join in!
Age of Wonders 3 improves on the originals by adding RPG-inspired classes and specialisations. A new battle system enacts all the carnage, designed to be streamlined and intense, with armies clashing, monsters raiding, and cities under siege.
The game is now fully 3D, built on Triumph Studios’ own Creator Engine, which was used for the Overlord games. Modding support is on the cards, with tools planned for release post launch.
Triumph Studios says that many of the original developers of the 1999 debut were in action for Age of Wonder 3.
For starters we have our two founders Lennart Sas and Arno van Wingerden who are leading the development team and the development of our in-house game engine.
Djurre van Dijk (aka SikBok) is back as technical producer and Arnout Sas is doing game design again. Next to that we are very excited to work again with Ray Bingham, who is writing the story and Michiel van den Bos, who composed the music for Age of Wonders 1 and both our Overlord games.
The launch trailer shows the game’s 6 leader classes in action along with a sample of the many forces opposing them.
