Dota 2 International prize money reaches new highs

12 May 2014

The prize money for the Dota 2 The International 2014 currently stands at $2.9 million (R30,052,700) – eclipsing last year’s prize pool of $2.8m.

Valve was able to raise the money through crowd funding by selling the Compendium – a virtual book which will deliver news on the tournament and allow players to vote on tournament-related matters (such as competitor awards) and lets spectators make predictions on match outcomes.

The Compendium can be purchased from the Dota 2 store for $9.99 (R103), and it took fans of the game less than a day to buy enough copies to reach the record prize tally.

Dota 2 The International takes place at the Key Arena in Seattle, USA, from 18 – 21 July 2014. The tickets for the event were sold out in an under an hour at the beginning of last month.
