Publisher THQ is alive, sort of, after Nordic Games purchased the defunct company’s name with the intention of releasing games under its moniker.
In 2013 – before they bought the THQ trademark outright – Nordic Games acquired some intellectual property from THQ, including Darksiders, MX vs ATV, Red Faction, and Titan Quest for $4.9 million (±R52.6 million).
“It was kind of a surprise to some industry veterans and players that we were the winner of the auction of the THQ titles,” said Nordic Games general manager Klemens Kruezer.
“The challenging fact is nobody has ever heard about Nordic Games before [the THQ auction]. There were so many articles with the headlines ‘Who the f*** is Nordic Games?’ [that] we said, ‘Okay they were right’.”
Nordic Games was established in 2011 in Austria and built their business on acquiring brands from bankrupt publishers JoWooD and DreamCatcher.
“We have seen an uplift in the name of Nordic Games, and what we have also done is we have made a second deal with THQ where we bought the THQ trademark.”
More game announcements from Nordic/THQ are apparently planned for Gamescom in August 2014.
