Any game can be cracked with enough time and effort, and developers should focus on making games that people want to pay for, instead of relying on DRM to prevent piracy.
This is the opinion of Ubisoft’s vice-president of digital publishing, Chris Early, who spoke about how the publisher wants to make games which cannot easily be pirated.
“What becomes key for us is we’re delivering an experience to paying players that is quality. I don’t want us in a position where we’re punishing a paying player for what a pirate can get around. So the question becomes, what do we create as services, or as benefits, and the quality of the game, that will just have people want to pay for it?” said Early.
Early added that besides making better and more compelling games, Ubisoft may introduce titles with more online services which will not be available to pirates.
“The reality is, the more service there is in a game, pirates don’t get that. So when it’s a good game and there’s good services around it, you’re incentivised to not pirate the game to get the full experience.”
Following Ubisoft’s recent issues with Uplay, do you think it will be able to manage “online services” in games? Let us know in the comments and forum.
