Dota 2 The International 2014, which takes place from 18 – 21 July in Seattle, is a tournament most gamers are familiar with.
Its fans enjoy the spectacle so much that the 10,000 tickets for the event sold out in under an hour after going on sale, and they helped raise over $10.7 million (±R114 million) in prize money for the tournament through Compendium purchases.
Valve, having noted the popularity – and money – involved in its The International, is contemplating a Counter-Strike tournament in the same vein.
In a recent interview, Valve’s Erik Johnson suggested the company might try “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive The International”.
“I don’t see any reason why a lot of the same things couldn’t be applied directly to Counter-Strike. I don’t know if it would be called The International, but the guys working on Counter-Strike made a lot of progress on supporting the professional community around that game,” said Johnson.
“We all work at the same company and share a lot of ideas, and given how successful this tournament [The International] has become, I don’t see any reason why a lot of the same things couldn’t be applied directly to Counter-Strike.”
Johnson said that no official announcement could be made just yet, but Valve could not ignore the overwhelming response The International had generated this year.
Counter-Strike is one of the most popular games on Steam, along with Dota 2, and is owned by millions of gamers.
