EA wants to make $1 billion in DLC in 2014

EA is hoping to rake in the cash this year – not through game sales, but by selling DLC to gamers.

The game publisher is aiming to hit the $1 billion mark – that’s over R10 billion – in digital add-on content sales in its current financial year.

According to EA, titles like madden NFL 15 – along with other EA Sports titles – will be the main contributors to Dr Evil’s world hostage payment. The company’s faith in Madden is well placed, with the title’s add-on content revenue rising by 350% in the second quarter of 2014, compared to the first.

Another game where EA is raking in the DLC cash is Battlefield 4, and no doubt Hardline will follow the same course.

For those of you looking forward to Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Sims 4, expect a plethora of paid-for DLC – EA has to make money in its 2015 financial year, too.

Out of interest, I had a quick browse through Origin to see how much DLC and add-on content was available. Please note that the following is all paid-for additional content.

  • Battlefield 4 – 36 pieces of DLC, 4 expansions
  • The Sims 3 – 14 expansions
  • Need for Speed Rivals – 12 pieces of DLC

Looks like, in the case of EA at least, paid-for add-on content is here to stay.
