Aliens! Aliens everywhere!

South African-born director (and CG mech fan) Neil Blomkamp is reportedly on board to direct the next Alien movie.

The news comes through Variety, which reports that 20th Century Fox has closed a deal with Blomkamp to make the not-yet-titled trip into space, set for release sometime after the next Prometheus film (due 2016).

The news has been confirmed by insiders at Fox, Variety says, and Blomkamp himself.

“So I think this is officially my next film,” he said on Instagram.

Blomkamp, you may recall, was once pegged to direct a Halo movie (a game series which features the Covenant alien race), but that fell through because he was untested as a director at that point.

Now with two successful movies behind his name (one prominently featuring aliens), and a third coming out soon, it’s evident the Jozi boy is in the big leagues and ready to tackle something as loved as the Alien franchise.

Presumably, the movie is unlikely to star the Johannesburg skyline – and hopefully Yolani Visser and Ninja from Die Antwoord will stay far away.

With all this talk of aliens, what better excuse do we need to look at some of our favourite aliens in gaming?

Xenomorphs – Alien: Isolation

Come on, the article opened with a ‘where to’ for the next Alien movie, you had to have known the most famous aliens would make the cut.

While the Xenomorphs haven’t always had the best representation in the gaming world, the latest Alien gaming title reminded us exactly why these bastards are so terrifying.

Whether they’re hitting you up with chest-bursters, or giving you the most uncomfortable french kiss ever (melt-your-face acid spit include), the Xeno’s are by far the most bad-ass aliens around.

We can’t wait to see them in action again.

PuPu – Final Fantasy

PuPu is an adorable alien monster from Final Fantasy 8. He (she?) is part of an obscure side-quest that demands you give up your precious elixirs.

Typically you’d be hard-pressed to give up these vital potions, but…look at him. He’s adorable. You just want to squeeze his little blue body until it explodes into candy.

The little blue guy has made brief appearances across the later Final Fantasy titles, but little else is known about him – except that he remains adorable and awesome.

Another notable alien from Final Fantasy is Jenova, I guess, but she’s far less huggable.

Turians – Mass Effect

Mass Effect has a lot of alien races to choose from – from the democracy-loving Asari, to the slave-trading Batarians. But when it comes to being the most awesome, the Turians take the prize.

Why? Two words: Garrus. Vakarian.

Even though the Turians are uptight and militant – harping on about “discipline” and “order” all the time – Garrus kicks that right in the pantaloons by being a vigilante that gets things done his way.

It also helps that the calibration-obsessed ET is a loyal alien bro who sticks by Shepard across the series, and makes the best awkward alien lover ever.

Greys – Silent Hill

The greys in Silent Hill are considered non-canon. They turn up as part of an ongoing “joke ending” theme in the series.

They earn their place on this list by simply being the least terrifying thing in the Silent Hill games. In fact, had they been responsible for all the disturbing goings-on the whole time, we would sleep easier at night because that means the demons aren’t inside us.

In Silent Hill Origins it was shown that the greys were also working with the adorable puppy that was revealed to be the one torturing James Sunderland in Silent Hill 2.

We love puppies, and love the people who love puppies.

Alien Penis – Spore

Okay, wait, no.

Feeble – Feeble Files

“Who?” we hear you ask.

You may not have heard of this alien character from Adventure Soft’s 1997 point-and-click adventure game The Feeble Files, but really, you ought to have.

He’s rather British, and also a little bit pathetic. He’s an every-day ma-er, alien, reluctantly thrust into adventure much like The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’s Arthur Dent. But more green.

Despite a “fascist” company ruling over him, and a mother who wants him to visit home – not to mention falling for a rebellious freedom fighter alien lady – Feeble beats the odds and goes ahead and saves the day anyway.

He also looks fabulous in a dress.
