Mortal Kombat fansite TRMK is reporting that they have “independently confirmed with multiple industry sources that a high definition Mortal Kombat arcade update is indeed currently in development.”
This news has yet to be officially confirmed by either Mortal Kombat franchise publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment or long time developer NetherRealm Studios (formerly Midway Games Chicago).
The game has been slapped with the moniker ‘Mortal Kombat HD Kollection.’ To back up their story, TRMK claims that a number of European game retailers were for a short time listing a Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection product as a pre-order for November 2010, before suddenly removing the product listing. TRMK hypothesizes that this means the stores were told of the product before being told that Warner Bros. wasn’t ready to officially announce it.
TRMK also claims to “know for sure” that character animation filming had taken place in Los Angeles as recently as the beginning of August 2010. The original Mortal Kombat series was known for its animated character sprites which were based on footage taken of live action actors. Logic dictates that new HD footage would be required for a remake.
TRMK acknowledges that if a Mortal Kombat HD remake is on the cards, this recent character animation filming indicates that the game will not be released in time for the 2010 Christmas holidays.
