In the wee hours of the morning, Activision held a reveal event for the multiplayer component of their upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops in LA. The main announcement was Wager Mode, which allows player to gamble in-game currency in multiplayer.
Wager mode
Wager mode is one of the more interesting gameplay modes set to debut in Black Ops. There are four Wager game modes, and they operate separately from the leveling system being used thoughout the rest of the game. This means you will not gain XP or unlock weapons when playing in Wager mode. The currency earned in Wager mode can be used to buy things in the in game economy, although it remains unclear exactly what will be for sale.
Instead, players will earn in game currency which they will gamble with in Wager mode. In order to earn currency, you need to place in the top 3. Come below the top 3, and you lose the currency you wagered.
The first Wager gameplay mode is called “One in the chamber.” Players all spawn into the game with just a pistol and one bullet. If they manage to kill an enemy with their pistol, they will take their bullet and be able to use the pistol again. If they miss, they are stuck with melee attacks.
The second Wager mode is called Sticks and Stones. In this mode, players spawn with just a ballistics knife (a knife that shoots a blade), a crossbow, and a tomahawk (throwing axe). If you kill someone with the tomahawk you will bankrupt them.
The third Wager mode is called “Gun game”. Players will start with the most basic gun, and work their way through all the guns. Each kill moves the player onto the next gun, but if they get knifed, they are set back one tier. The first player to get through all the guns wins the Wager game.
The fourth Wager mode is called Sharpshooter. In Sharshooter, all players start with the same randomly selected weapon and have to use it for a set amount of time. All players will move onto the next weapon when the time is up. With each kill, the player will earn a perk, and eventually a scoring multiplier.
