Modders do what they’re told not to in Dead or Alive 5 Last Round

We’re not sure Dead or Alive’s director, Yohei Shimbori, understands the human condition. At the very least, he certainly has no idea how the PC modding community works.

In early February of this year, during an interview with MCV, Shimbori asked, or rather warned, PC modders not to immorally mod Dead or Alive 5 Last Round when it arrives on PC – it being the first and potentially the last Team Ninja game to reach PC gaming shores.

We have to deal with mod issues from an IP holder perspective,” he said. “We would like to ask PC users to play our game in good moral and manner. Otherwise, we won’t be able to release a title for PC again.” Well, the moment he told modders not to, a switch in their brains must have flicked because that’s exactly what they did. Is anyone really surprised though? What happens when you tell someone not to do something? It’s so primordial; it’s an almost autonomic response.

According to Kotaku (WARNING: THIS ARTICLE IS NSFW), it took around a day before the first nude mod went live.

In a follow up comment to the interview with MCV, as reported by Eurogamer, producer Yosuke Hayashi and director Yohei Shimbori apologised for angering the PC gaming community; you can thank their ultimatum for that.

They then went on at length to describe the reasons they’d disallow mods that changed current characters, and that it was to protect their characters as well as the moral integrity of their license. However, a Steam Community post claims that Team Ninja are pulling down mods that make any sort of adjustment to textures, even if morally-inclined. Apparently, even post-processing effects are taboo. That’s fairly annoying when you consider that Dead or Alive 5 Last Round looks to be using an inferior port as compared to the PS4 and Xbox One versions.

No more Team Ninja games then? Some might argue that it’s good riddance.
