Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel developer closes

After the success of the original BioShock, many questioned handing over development of BioShock 2 to 2K Australia. Following BioShock 2’s release, some were more than happy to call it an improvement over its former; others were convinced that it was an inferior title in every aspect. It seems that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel garnered the same sort of divide amongst both gamers and critics alike.

We enjoyed The Pre-Sequel. It was light on new, innovative mechanics, but it was still edgy, funny, a blast to play with friends and more of what we wanted. It didn’t need to reinvent the wheel. So we’re a little sad to see its developer, 2K Australia, go.

A source has revealed to Kotaku that 2K Australia has closed its doors indefinitely, and all staff have been laid off. “All hands are gone,” said the source.

2K then went on to confirm the source’s report with this reply regarding the matter:

We can confirm we have taken steps to begin the studio closure process for 2K Australia in order to better manage ongoing development costs, while improving the working proximity of our creative teams. We are very grateful for the team’s valuable contributions to numerous 2K projects, and are working with affected staff to explore reassignment opportunities where possible.”

Here’s hoping that the employees of 2K Australia find new studios to call home. There was certainly some talent to be found amongst them.
