The PlayStation Vita 3000 has just be trademarked in Japan. The news follows on from a tweet by a Japanese trademark reporting bot account.

This more than likely means a new PS Vita model is in development, but that’s not too surprising. What we want to know is whether or not the PS Vita 3000, if that’s what it’s called, will come with LTE support, or HDMI out perhaps? They’re both highly requested features, and for good reason.

We doubt it.

The trademark filed was a positional trademark. Here’s an excellent description of just what a positional trademark is. But what it essentially means is that Sony wants to slightly adjust the original design of the PS Vita. That accounts for small adjustments like colour changes, component tweaks or simple model refinements. That’s when you file a positional trademark—to cut down on the paperwork—so we doubt we’ll see any massive changes.

Along with the new PlayStation Vita 3000 positional trademark, Sony also filed a DualShock controller trademark. This was also tweeted by the very same bot. This could mean a new DualShock 3 is on the way, but that’s about it.

As for the PlayStation Vita remodel, the trademark provides no hints whatsoever for any potential hardware changes. It does hint at a new layout design, however. The last time Sony filed a PlayStation Vita trademark was in 2013, and we received a PlayStation Vita Slim model later that year. We won’t be surprised if the PS Vita 3000 is, whatever it is, is announced at E3 this year.

With E3 around the corner, there are sure some surprises in store.
