May’s Games with Gold for Xbox One and Xbox 360 are underwhelming

Xbox One & Xbox 360 - Games with Gold

We realise that Microsoft’s Games with Gold campaign has, on the whole, been more underwhelming than not, so it’s hardly a surprise that May’s titles on offer are too. But Microsoft has really stepped up over the past few months, and we were rather hoping they would for May as well. Oh well, you can’t win them all. It’s still free games.

Here’s what you can expect for Xbox One and Xbox 360 for the month of May:

Castle Storm

Castle Storm is a weird tower defence/beat ’em up mash-up, and worth looking into.

CastleStorm: Definitive Edition is not your average tower defence title, and really rather enjoyable for it. Think of it as a physics based tower defence, beat ‘em up amalgamation. The campaign is entertaining enough, and there’s some room for replayability. Our one gripe with CastleStorm is that its multiplayer has some serious drawbacks that hinder the experience.

As for the Xbox One’s second title for May, well Microsoft really just called it home on this one. They’ve extended Pool Nation FX for another month – oh goodie (sarcasm much). There’s a lot more to the Xbox One’s library. You can do better Microsoft.

Mafia 2

Mafia 2 is hardly a new game, but it’s definitely worth playing if you haven’t already.

What can be said about Mafia 2 that hasn’t already been said? It’s a fairly generic GTA wannabe. It’s about causing mischief, running over pedestrians, evading the police and generally larking about. It could be better, but it’s worth looking into if you’ve never played it before. We’d recommend GTA V or Saints Row III or IV instead.

F1 2013

Why not Forza Microsoft? Because it still sells, that’s why.

It’s really rather simple: Microsoft isn’t willing to giveaway Forza just yet, so here’s F1 2013 instead.

“It’s about causing mischief, running over pedestrians, evading the police and generally larking about” – Author on Mafia 2.

You’ve obviously never played the game to which you just passed judgement. In Mafia, for some reason you actually want to drive properly and the story is its main selling point. It’s better than most sandbox games out there
