Following a slew of mysterious tweets from Tony Hawk, the Birdman himself, we now know that a new Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game is in the works. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 (THPS 5) is being developed by Robomodo and Disruptive Games. It’s planned as a return to the classic formula of much earlier Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games.
According to Activision, THPS 5 will encompass gameplay elements from the first four titles in the main THPS series. If we see a graceful return to what made the THPS series enjoyable and fun in the first place, then we could be on to something more. The earlier games on both the original PlayStation and even the PlayStation 2 were highly addictive, and we hope THPS 5 will be just as addictive.
THPS 5 needs to be about pulling off big air tricks and grinding on rails like there’s no tomorrow. If you miscalculate a trick combo midway and end up with your rag doll body flung across a skate park, then Robomodo and Disruptive Games are doing their job right.
Additions to the core gameplay mechanics will include power-ups and the ability to shoot projectiles. If these elements don’t hinder or obstruct the core arcade feel of the game, and rather add an extra layer, then they should work well in the new game.
Of course, THPS 5 will showcase a set of new levels which you can play with friends or solo. You will be able to have a session with friends online and seamlessly take your character offline if you want. The game will also feature created skate parks which you will be able to share with friends online.
Tony Hawks, as expected, will be on the main character roster, along with many familiar skaters. He will be joined by new generation skaters which include the likes of Lizzie Armanto, Chris Cole, David Gonzalez, Leticia Bufoni, Andrew Reynolds, Nyjah Huston, Aaron Homoki, Ishod Wair and Riley Hawk.
THPS 5 is expected to be released on both PS4 and Xbox One later this year. PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game will follow shortly thereafter. We are really looking forward to a new THPS.
