Often comparing two competing operating systems can be pretty pointless. But what are the performance differences between Mac OS X and the newly minted Windows 10, just for curiosity’s sake?
This may be the conclusion of one person in particular, but according to computer science student, Alex King, at Tufts University in Medford-Somerville, Massachusetts, there are some stark contrasts between the two. But more specifically, the student concluded, Windows 10 is faster than OS X.
How did he come to this conclusion, you’re probably wondering? Well, King ran a cross-platform benchmark on a MacBook using Boot Camp installing and running both Windows 10 and OS X comparatively.
He ran his benchmark tests on a 2015 12-inch MacBook and upgraded his Windows 8.1 install to the Windows 10 Insider Preview.
One of the first things King did was increase desktop scaling to 150%, as the 2015 MacBook has a 2304×1440 resolution at 16:10. He remarked that everything ran smoothly rendering usually at around 60fps, unless there was a higher load on the system.
The performance was much better than expected on the new Windows platform and King argues that Apple really need to overhaul how animations work in OS X.
Keep in mind that Windows 10 would have undergone a number of optimisations between King’s benchmark and its final release later this year, likely resulting in an even larger performance gap.
Even when turning off features such as transparency in OS X, Mission Control isn’t completely smooth when compared to Windows 10 where Aero Glass transparency is enabled and everything runs like butter.
Funnily, we have an unlikely combination of improved performance on one of the newest MacBooks with a Microsoft OS in Windows 10. The times are indeed changing, and Windows 10 may indeed be a game-changer for Microsoft – DirectX 12 notwithstanding of course.
