Sony TGS 2010 press event highlights

16 September 2010

Sony has wrapped up their Tokyo Game Show press conference and there is a whole lot of news for gamers to digest. Along with Sony, a number of game developers took to the stage to show off their latest PS3 offerings.

Sony kicked off by bragging about global PS3 sales figures – 38 million consoles and 310 million games sold.

With the PlayStation Move controller due out in October, Sony showed off a variety of Move ready titles, including Resident Evil 5, Time Crisis, Killzone 3 and LittleBigPlanet 2. So far they have 13 developers creating 35 games for the Move.

The presentation turned to 3D, and live demo’s of Everybody’s Golf and Final Fantasy XIV were given. A Metal Gear Solid: Rising trailer was shown in 3D, along with some Gran Turismo 5 footage. GT5 has just been confirmed to have realistic weather effects that will affect car handling, and a cool day/night cycle.

An official announcement was made regarding the next firmware update – version 3.5 will bring 3D Blu-ray movie support, and is due out on 21 September.

Square Enix was next, showing off trailers for their PSP title, The 3rd Birthday, an international edition of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, and the Final Fantasy mashup, Dissidia 2. Strangely, Square did not allow any of the video footage to be shown on the live conference stream, so we’ll just have to wait for official video releases.

Next up was Capcom’s Keiji Inafune, who talked about their new IP, Asura’s Wrath, and the new Devil May Cry title, DmC, which is being handled by Ninja Theory. Capcom had already revealed three new titles at their pre-TGS conference.

Konami had their turn, showing off the ‘rebirth’ of the Castlevania series with Lords of Shadow. This was one of the trailers that was allowed through the live feed, and it shows off a range of interesting features.

Team Ico took to the stage and demonstrated footage of the ICO and Shadow of the Colossus HD revamps as well as the highly anticipated, The Last Guardian.

From Software hinted at a title called Project Dark, which is apparently aimed at Demon’s Souls fans – a dark fantasy title due out next year as a PS3 exclusive.

Finally, Koei Tecmo stepped up to announce Dynasty Warriors 6 as a PS3 exclusive.
