Unreal Engine 4 is a powerful tool in the hands of a good developer, and something otherworldly when in the hands of a great developer.
From what we’ve seen from the upcoming Unreal Tournament, the engine is shaping up be amazing.
A talented French artist known as Koola has actively been testing the limits of the engine. With Unreal Engine 4, Koola has been able to deliver photo-realistic real-time architectural visualisations.
Originally, he was able to deliver photo-realistic graphics at around 30 to 45fps, on a i7-3770 with a GTX670, as shown in the video below.
But he has now approached consistent real-time graphics rendering at 50 to 60fps. All of these renderings are photo-realistic, and the fact that he is getting between 50 to 60fps is impressive to say the least.
What we really want to know is what rig he’s using to pull of these visuals and frames. And imagine what he’d achieve with a GTX 980ti or AMD Fiji XT?
The shader, lighting and textural possibilities seem infinite with the latest Unreal Engine, and these pictures perhaps hint at extremely realistic graphics in the future. Plausibly though it may be, this only applies to PC gamers.
All that is hinted at is that Koola is using “consumer-level hardware” to render everything. Could he be using this rig, with 18-cores? Realistically that might be a bit overkill.
The fact that one artist is already getting performance like this out of Unreal Engine 4 is staggering. We can’t wait to see what Epic Games delivers with Unreal Tournament in the near future. It is sure to impress.
