A truly legit Fallout Pip-Boy 3000, and it works

With all of the Fallout 4 news lately, such as a fan pre-ordering the game with bottle caps and the awesome Fallout 4 Pip-Boy Collector’s Edition, this real-life fully-working Pip-Boy 3000 takes the radiated cake.

For those of you who don’t know, the International Space Apps Challenge is a two-day hackfest, hosted by NASA. The challenge hopes to lead to the creation of solutions that address global needs, all through collaboration.

Last year’s challenge asked participants to design and produce wearable technology. Technology that can assist people with tasks, as complex as facility maintenance, or something as aiding us in our general lives.

That sounds a whole lot like the Pip-Boy 3000 from the Fallout games.

Team Reno agreed, and created a legit Pip-Boy. They incorporated environmental sensors into easy use cuff device.

This version of the Pip-Boy determines if the wearer’s environment is safe.

The device incorporates a sensor HUD that displays humidity, altitude/latitude/longitude, atmospheric pressure, ambient temperature, object temperature (using infrared thermometer) and radiation readings relative to the user.

It also has real-time mapping, that is built into the iOS app for the device, with all information actively being sent to the web.

Amazingly, the unit was created in a mere 48 hours.

In the future, the Team Reno wants to add heart rate monitor and other important metrics to the HUD. They also want to include some form of communication feature that will allow their Web HQ to push messages to the user.

This is a great achievement for all gamers, especially Fallout fans who perhaps only want a Pip-Boy, a fully-working one with real-world applications, and have some money lying around.
