Nowadays, it appears that Sega is only known for Sonic games, and making bad Sonic games at that.
Of course, not being totally incompetent, they have published excellent games like Alien: Isolation, but sadly, they don’t seem do be doing much in the way of good game development themselves.
There are so many awesome franchises Sega could bring back from the brink, as we have suggested before.
It often feels as if Sega has it out for its fans. However, it seems that someone at Sega has realised that they have lost the plot and wants to regain gamers and fans trust.
In an interview with Famitsu, Sega CEO and president Hajime Satomi talked about the quality of future Sega games, and had this to say:
I’ve been talking to the employees about how we should start putting serious consideration into quality from this point on, especially in North America and Europe, where it’s always been more of a focus on schedules, I believe that if we can’t maintain quality, it would be better to not release anything at all…We did our best to build a relationship of mutual trust with older fans of Sega, but looking back, there’ve been some titles that have partially betrayed that [trust]in the past 10 years.
Sega in the ‘90s was known for its ‘brand, but after that, we’ve lost trust, and we were left with nothing but ‘reputation. For this reason, we’d like to win back the customers’ trust, and become a ‘brand,’ once again.
Could this finally be the breakthrough for Sega? They do have successful franchises, but whether they will bring any of this back is questionable at this point in time.
Now that former Sega game series, like Shenmue, are making a return with Shenmue 3, Sega desperately needs to make user of their properties to win gamers back.
Yet, when Satomi was asked about the possibility of seeing a new console game in the coming year, he said he couldn’t make a definite promise, explaining, “I believe we will announce something for home console at Tokyo Game Show.”
We wonder what the announcement for TGS will be? For now, it’s great to see Sega realising that they’ve made some grave mistakes. Sega just needs to realise that they are not only about Sonic.
