Speaking to Gametrailers, Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia has announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops will ship multiplatform 3D ready when it is released on November 9, 2010.
Sony has pushed 3D gaming hard, which is probably due in part to the fact that the company also makes 3D TVs. However, Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg said earlier this year that the Xbox 360 is fully equipped to handle 3D games, but that he was not convinced that there was significant interest in the technology.
There are already hundreds of PC games that support 3D gaming, including Bad Company2 and Borderlands. It is really just a matter of having the right equipment. In the case of PC gaming, this means a special 3D capable monitor, glasses and graphics card. Console owners will simply need a 3D capable TV and glasses.
Lamia admits that running a game in 3D creates additional system overhead, due to the fact that extra frames need to be rendered. He feels however that Treyarch has tuned the game sufficiently to make gameplay smooth when 3D is activated.
Lamia states in the interview that the game will support multiplatform 3D, so we can assume that the PS3, PC and Xbox 360 versions will all be 3D compatible. The single player, multiplayer and zombie levels will be playable in 3D, as will split-screen mode. He does not believe that playing in 3D will give players an advantage in multiplayer.
