Launch trailers, particularly for action games, are all much of a muchness – thrilling or otherwise frenetic scenes strung together for the sake of selling the perceived experience of the game.
At times, the plot is lightly woven into the trailer, and everything is mixed together with any number of fade ins and outs, Inception fog horns and an exhilarating piece of music.
For the most part, they do what they’re intended, convert hype into sales. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s launch trailer is a little bit different.
Directed by Hideo Kojima itself, the trailer is both a homage to the Metal Gear Franchise in its entirety while still establishing the roots for MGS V.
It tells the tale of Metal Gear Solid as it has unfolded this far, and then it cuts to Snake, the protagonist of MGS V – or is he?
The launch trailer closes out by asking the same question so many of the franchise’s fans have had going into the game.
How does Snake, protagonist of MGS V and supposed hero, become the war tyrant we eventually know him to be?
You’ll have to play the game to find out, even if it’s only because this will be Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid swansong.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain releases for all platforms on September 1st.
