The Sonic Fan Remix project has released a three level demo of their 2.5D homage to the classic hyper-speed platformer of yore. The project aims to re-imagine classic levels from Sonic 1, 2 and 3. The project is being developed on the Unity 3D engine, a cross platform games development framework.
The demo consists of 3 Acts in the Emerald Hill Zone – the first zone from Sonic 2. Acts 1 and 2 are recreations of the original level layouts, with slight tweaks. Act 2 is an original layout by the project developers, set to the Emerald Hill theme.
The Remix introduces new animated backgrounds to the levels – Act 2 is set to a rainy environment, and Act 3 is set at night. The whole project is looking insanely awesome – especially impressive as it comes from a couple of indie developers. The legality of all this is lurking in a grey area, as SEGA has yet to weigh in on the matter. Hopefully they won’t be a stick in the mud.
Grab the demo over at the Sonic Fan Remix website (it’s just under 100mb) and stay up to date with developments on the official Sonic Retro forum thread for Sonic Fan Remix. If the short video montage above tickled your fancy, then get busy downloading the demo and prepare to have your fancy tickled even more while you wait and watch this full demo run.
