New, gloriously gory details about Doom

Doom

Last week, much to our delight, a few details about the latest game from id Software’s Doom surfaced, including some brilliant screenshots which have whet our appetite for gory first-person shooting to no end.

Additional details were revealed during the Game Informer Show podcast, including information about how keycards work, the game’s story progression and much more.

Keycards will come in three varieties, blue, yellow and red. Each keycard will open a corresponding door, as is expected. These doors can be located throughout the levels you make your way through. However, the keycards will be spaced out more than in the original Doom.

So, yes, in this latest iteration of Doom, keycards will be used for progression and gaining access to secrets. But before you freak out at how antiquated this all sounds, it’s purposefully retro.

The game will in no way be a “keycard simulator” like the original games.

From a storytelling perspective, Doom looks and sounds rather interesting. The game’s story will unfold as the player actively participates in the game, rather than having it parroted back to you, which has been compared by some as a similar narrative approach to Dead Space.

Other interesting tidbits of information include the Glory Kills that are similar to the stealth kills found in Wolfenstein: The New Order, except much faster and far more brutal.

Glory Kills will be extremely quick and exaggerated melee attacks that will let a player dispose of enemies up close and personal.

Initially, Bethesda set aside fears that these Glory Kills won’t affect the flow of the game, which was later confirmed to be true by the Game Informer Show podcast.

The Game Informer Show podcast said that Glory Kills work extremely well in the game and create quick pauses between the chaotic and fast-paced enemy encounters.

A final release date has not yet been confirmed for Doom. But an Amazon France leak points to a June 30th release date for the game, which you can see in the screenshot below.

Doom Release Date

Amazon France has correctly leaked previous game release dates before, such as that of Rise of the Tomb Raider and Forza 6, so they may be onto something.

Doom will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Tell us in the comments and forum section, your thoughts on the latest Doom and the direction the franchise is now taking.
