World War II shooters were once the crème de la crème of the gaming world, with every big developer and publisher wanting to get in on the action, and boy, was it glorious.
The 1940’s milieu soon faded for more modern and futuristic military shooters, but gamers can’t help feel a void has been left.
Thankfully, Bulkhead Interactive, a British developer, has announced Battalion 1944 – an online WWII shooter akin to the early Call of Duty and Medal of Honor titles. Namely, a World War II shooter for the current generation.
“At Bulkhead Interactive, we’ve all grown up playing classic shooters like COD2 and Medal of Honor,” says executive producer, Joe Brammer.
“It’s been a decade since we last saw a great WW2 First Person Shooter and I think the genre’s resurgence is long overdue. We’re focusing on community driven development. We want to work with passionate community of players who have a strong connection to the genre like we do.”
The game will also attempt to level the playing field and focus on player skill rather than power-ups, which have become the norm in competitive shooters these days.
“We’re stripping out unbalanced unlocks, over-powered abilities, just to try and reinstate the fun and the skill of the game,” added Brammer.
Despite the removal of modern-day unlocks, players will still be able to unlock customisation options, ranging from gun engraving, clan insignias and different uniforms.
The game also uses real-world locations for maps, including the streets of Carentan and the forests of Bastogne.
Battalion 1944 will have multiple seasons through Battlerank – Bulkhead’s global competition system. Each season, players will be able to participate in events to earn cosmetic rewards for their avatar, weapons or accessories (none of which have a bearing in-game).
Battalion 1944 is scheduled to release on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, and the developers have launched a Kickstarter with a £100,000 goal, which should be reached pretty soon.
