During a Media & Telecom Conference, EA’s Chief Financial Officer, Blake Jorgensen, confirmed the release window for a number of their biggest hitters:
“We’ve got our Battlefield first-person shooter game coming in the third quarter, and our third-party title that Respawn, our partner, built. It’s called Titanfall, it’s the second title that they brought into that brand. Both of those are first-person shooters and will be targeted around the fast, action-driven shooter market, as well as the strategy-driven market in that quarter,” said Jorgensen – thanks WCCF Tech.
EA’s third quarter takes place between October 1st and December 31st, putting both Battlefield 5 and Titanfall 2’s release firmly within 2016.
On the other hand, Mass Effect Andromeda has been pushed into 2017, releasing during EA’s fourth quarter. “And then we have Mass Effect, which is a sci-fi action game, in our fourth quarter,” continued Jorgensen.
That’s a lot to be excited about during this and early next year.
Now, of course, there’s a rumour going around that Battlefield 5—also nicknamed Battlefield 2016, until DICE confirms otherwise—is going to be based in World War 1. We doubt it.
World War 1 is not a good fit for the Battlefield formula – that is, armoured vehicles, aircraft, tactical squad play and coordination between each.
War World 1 was a lot of standing around in trenches, artillery batteries, the odd cavalry charge and unwieldy machine gun nests – a lot of which will alienate current fans of the series.
As for Titanfall 2 and Mass Effect Andromeda, well we don’t know much about either. Employees within EA, DICE and Respawn have said great things about each title, but we can’t recall any developer trashing their game before a reveal.
