Daybreak has announced that it has discontinued the development of EverQuest Next.
“Unfortunately, as we put together the pieces, we found that it wasn’t fun,” said Daybreak Games.
The game would have been the first EverQuest MMORPG title in 12 years, preceded by EverQuest I and EverQuest II.
EverQuest Next has been in development since its announcement in 2013 alongside its related Landmark title, which was planned to precede EverQuest Next’s release.
The game was proposed as a revolutionary change to the conventional MMORPG model, featuring a voxel-based destructible world in addition to improved iterations of features from EverQuest I and II.
Landmark was planned to be a collection of tools which would later be implemented into the voxel-based world of EverQuest Next.
The cancellation of EverQuest Next does not mean the death of Landmark, which is already available in early access through Steam.
Work on Landmark will continue, and the voxel-based sandbox will cost $9.99 when it releases.
