The city of Tshwane is now offering free coding lessons

The City of Tshwane has begun offering free coding lessons to all of its inhabitants.

Interested users can access 20 free coding lessons (provided for by Code.org) by connecting to the municipally-owned TshwiFi service and navigating to the Tobetsa online portal.

Targeted at school-going children, all of the presentations are available as YouTube videos, beginning with fundamental terminology and the basics of creating your own program.

The TshwiFi service is accessible for free via numerous WiFi hotspots located in and around the city.

Free WiFi should be a human right. Along a similar vein, Hour of Code South Africa advocates that every child should have the opportunity to learn computer science.

Now, Project Isizwe’s Free WiFi users have the opportunity to learn the basics of computer science. Hour of Code South Africa offers a selection of 20 1-hour-long courses in which users of all ages are guided through tutorials and lessons that teach them how to start writing computer programs.

The free, unlimited access courses promote the development of problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. These important foundations for success in the 21st century are recognised by Project Isizwe as key developmental areas that should be accessible to all South African citizens.
