Black Ops dominates 2010 UK sales charts

10 January 2011

2010 turned into a sensational 12 months for Activision as Call of Duty: Black Ops ended the year as the best-selling video game, topping the coveted 2010 All Formats Chart, according to data released today by UKIE (The Association for United Kingdom Interactive Entertainment). The data was compiled by GfK Chart-Track.

Call of Duty: Black Ops has continued to set new records since its release in November last year, grossing more than £113.8 million (±R1,207 million) in its first week of sales, the biggest grossing week of all time for video games software.

Ubisoft also had a strong year, with Just Dance, Just Dance 2 and Assassins Creed: Brotherhood all featuring in the year’s best-selling All Format chart, alongside two games from Nintendo.

FIFA 11 remained popular with UK gamers in 2010, finishing second in the All Formats Chart and achieving a top two place on the PS3 and Xbox 360, as well as finishing the year as the best selling game on the PSP. As well as reaching number 3 in the All-Formats chart, Just Dance was the best selling Wii game of 2010. The Number One seller of the Nintendo DS chart was Professor Layton and the Lost Future, replicating last year’s success for Professor Layton and the Lost Village.

Michael Rawlinson, Director General of UKIE said, “2010 was another strong year for the video games industry, with record breaking sales figures from games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops. 2010 also saw casual gaming really take off, particularly on social networking sites and on mobile phones. With more video games than ever before being played, on an ever growing range of games consoles, PCs, mobile phones, mobile devices and internet enabled TVs, the industry has widened beyond all expectations and will continue to expand exponentially in 2011.”
