Kinect hack transforms photos into gigantic Minecraft monuments

11 January 2011

Proving, once again, that Kinect modders seem to have all the good ideas, Nathan Viniconis has written an app that imports photos from the device and shoves them into Minecraft, magically transforming them into gigantic monuments in the process.

Okay, I said this was a good idea, but actually, it’s quite probably not. I mean, everybody knows what’s going to happen next, because when the public at large gets hold of some kind of newfangled photography technology, they take pictures of one thing only. I’m thinking it, you’re thinking it…

Their Wiener dogs! Wiener dogs are so photogenic. I bet everyone’s going to take pictures of their wiener dogs.

There’s a rather comprehensive explanation of the processes involved in the hack on Nathan’s site, Order of Events. It includes some code blocks but if you don’t understand all the complicated maths stuff, there are also nice pictures of people high-fiving and a guy with swords. Currently the site seems to be buckling under increased traffic – one of the pitfalls of instant Internet fame.
