Anonymous activist takes down SABC websites

An activist hacker who associates with the Anonymous collective is performing a distributed denial of service attack against several SABC websites.

The attack was executed by a hacker who calls himself @zim4thewin and “Anonymous Africa” on Twitter.

Zim4thewin is the same hacktivist who attacked the websites of the ANC and IOL in June 2013 for “enabling… Robert Mugabe”.

Their attack on the SABC today was in protest to the decision of the SABC’s chief operating officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, to ban the filming of violent protests.

As per Zim’s usual modus operandi, a warning was delivered on Twitter before the attack.

Earlier today, Zim announced when the attacks began.

SAFM’s website was apparently the first to go down.

After 10 minutes, Zim had claimed that all of the SABC’s major websites were offline.

According to Zim, this was the largest DDoS attack South Africa had ever experienced.

Zim reaffirmed their motivations while the attack was underway.

They called for a revolution in Africa on the same scale as the Arab Spring.

Zim announced that the attacks against the SABC’s websites would stop at 16:00.
