The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa has announced it will launch an investigation into South Africa’s subscription television broadcasting market..
This is in order to determine why despite multiple attempts to introduce competition in the subscription broadcasting market, only two licensess have been able to launch services in the country.
In a Q&A session following ICASA’s press conference, chair of the board Katharina Pillay answered exactly why the regulator had taken so long to address these issues.
“Regulatory processes are never quick and this is is a highly litigious environment.”
Pillay also confirmed that this new board was currently working with the Competition Commission.
“There is currently no moratorium on new licensing but given scheduling, licensing wouldn’t have taken place during this period regardless.”
