US customs to start asking for your social media details when entering the country

27 June 2016

The US Customs and Border Protection have entered a new proposal into the federal register in a bid to allow persons entering the country to declare their various social media accounts and screen names.

In addition to the traditional mandatory personal details, a new optional data field is included, prompting visitors to “please enter information associated with your online presence”.

This is then followed by open fields for specific platforms and screen names.

The information wouldn’t be mandatory, reports The Verge, but the proposed field would still provide customs officials with an unprecedented window into the online life of travelers.

Would you hand over your social media details to customs officials? Let us know in the comments below and in our forums.
