Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) today unveiled the “PlayStation Suite” (PS Suite) which is their delivery platform for PlayStation games on Android devices. This initiative marks the first time that PlayStation content is available on an open operating system.
Android 2.3 is required.
Along with the announcement of the PSP2 came news of the PlayStation phone, which is actually an Android-based Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (headline picture). The Xperia Play comes with a slide-out gamepad styled after the trademark PlayStation controller. There is a touch sensitive pad that emulates the use of twin analog sticks. The Xperia play has a 10-centimetre screen and is powered by a 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8655 CPU, an Adreno 205 GPU, 512MB RAM, and 1GB ROM.
Sony marks this as a vigourous push into the booming mobile gaming market, and notes that it will provide developers with a broader audience.
SCE will commence a “PlayStation®Certified” license program for hardware manufacturers. Through this program, SCE will offer development support as well as logo licensing, to ensure the delivery of a “PlayStation quality experience across various devices.”
On the software front, SCE plans to provide PS Suite content within the calendar year of 2011, starting with original PlayStation games (PS one classics). Sony says they will announce titles “when ready.” SCE also plans a PlayStation Store for Android devices, from which users can download titles.
Newly developed content for PS Suite will also be available for the next generation portable (NGP) entertainment system (aka PSP2).
