ShowMax is officially one year old, and to celebrate they have introduced a new logo design.
It’s clear that Naspers’ is taking its video-on-demand (VOD) streaming service very seriously, but how big has ShowMax become?
While ShowMax remains silent about its number of actual subscribers since it launched in August 2015, it says that it has achieved 10 million “views” over the past year.
At the time of writing it currently offers 600 movie titles and 365 TV series all at the launch price of R99 per month.
This low price point, and continued development means that the company is is expected to break even in 2021 when it reaches 800,000 subscribers, reports Morgan Stanley.
So how does this compare to a service like Netflix which, despite having existed for over a decade, only recently made its way to local shores?
According to JustWatch, Netflix currently offers 742 movies and 267 TV series, with the cheapest monthly option coming in at $7.99 a month (R108.00).
That means ShowMax has technically surpassed Netflix in some areas, although Netflix does have greater international support.
