Those of you who are are regular internet users will no doubt have seen various sales under the “Black Friday” banner.
But what is Black Friday? Where did it come from?
We have the Americans to thank for this “shopping holiday” which takes place every year the day after Thanksgiving, according to Wikipedia.
Since 1932, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the U.S, with dozens of retailers opening after hours to accommodate shoppers.
As a result, it has routinely been the busiest shopping day of the year.
It has never actually been given public holiday status, although several states have now adopted Bank/Governmental holidays.
So why does this affect you in South Africa?
The world was tired of the Americans getting in on all of the action and global retailers were only happy to oblige.
The day has only snowballed in popularity, which is why we now have dozens of South African stores preparing shoppers for Black Friday nearly a week in advance.
